Photo Gallery
I finally did it. I have been working on integrating Gallery 2 in my Wordpress installation on and off for the last little while.
I have done it before, for our Wedding Website and it worked (and still works) flawlessly there, but I was running into weird issues, here on my blog. Not anymore. So here we go, pictures are up. Enjoy. Please also note the new Random Image section in the side bar to the right.
A whole bunch of older pictures is not available online yet. They have yet to be uploaded. Stay tuned. The individual albums I have up so far are:
For those who really want to read the technical details, please read on. For the rest: enjoy the photos.
Page generation for embedded gallery pages would just end after a few lines of HTML code — no error message in the browser, no error messages in the server logs. Just silence.
I tried many things, tweaked rewrite rules (I’ve had issues with those in the past), turned them off, tried a Wordpress / Gallery installation on another box (where it worked), and then I ran out of ideas. Till Thursday night. I was looking through the php.ini file after I read about the minimum requirements for WPG2 (16 MB of RAM). My php.ini said 20 MB. So it should have been enough. I increased it anyway — to 32 MB. I didn’t think it would do much, but I gave it a try anyways.
The success was immediate. My embedded gallery suddenly worked — rewrite rules enabled and everything. After that it was fairly easy. Some tweaks to the theme to make it look nice and get rid of the sidebar for photo pages (I need all the room for pictures) and it was done.
