Unfortunately there have been issues with my server, pretty much since we got back from our honeymoon. I think it was the evening of January 1 when it suddenly crashed. I couldn’t connect to it anymore.

Rebooting it on January 2 didn’t help either and it took another week to get physical access to the box and find out that there were apparently a bazillion read errors on the hard drive. — Bad news.

Fortunately not as bad as originally thought. Whatever the reason for the read errors, the hard drive seems to be perfectly fine now. I was able to recover all data from it (as evidenced by the fact that this blog looks just like it did before).

Currently the blog is running on my computer at home, which is better than nothing. It might be a little slow, though. The plan is to move it to a new server within a few days. It’s not going back onto the fairly unreliable box it was running on before. (That computer was built from a spare EPIA board and certainly wasn’t the best when it came to thermal issues.)

Other web sites (like the Wedding Blog) are still down as of right now. They’ll be back when the new server is set up.

I hope everybody had a good start into 2007. May the remainder of the year be even better.

I was yet again amazed as to how quiet (in regards to fire crackers) it was yesterday here in Vancouver. Back in Austria, kids are starting to make the occasional noise as early as Dec. 29, and it gets worse from there. Especially for pets, the evening of Dec. 31 tends to be very loud and stressful over there.

Not so here, and I quite like that.
